Question about GEDs, Studying Overseas?

Question by Kristy: Question about GEDs, Studying Overseas?
I was wondering…
I have a friend who is 14 and a freshman but she hasn’t been to school in more than half a semester. So I wanted to help her out a little.
But she likes Asia a lot.
She planned on getting a GED if she couldn’t pass this year.
Could you get a GED and go to a Musical Arts school learn to sing and dance? And then go study overseas? …
And could you go to any language learning schools with a GED?

Also, if you don’t go in your freshman year at all, what will happen? And can she get a GED when she turns 16 if she went out that early?

She will not be able to get into any specialized universities like the ones you mentioned. The best thing you could do for her is talk her into going back to school and getting here diploma. She is 14 years old and has no idea what she wants to do in life. She may think she does, but she doesn’t.

I know quite a bit about the university system, and let me explain this to you. If your friend drops out of high school at 14, and doesn’t get a GED, she will never be accepted to any college institution. A GED is required for community colleges.

Your friend will never get accepted to a four year institution or a specialized school if she doesn’t get her high school diploma. These schools are highly competitive, and they can take anyone they want. Universities want to bring in the best and the brightest young men and women. They are not going to accept someone with an eight grade education. They will think if she couldn’t even make through her first year in high school, she will never make it here.

If your friend drops out and gets her GED then she can attend a community college and enroll herself in their musical arts program. From there she can set up a transfer agreement (articulation agreement) with a four year institution and transfer to that institution after she has completed her first two years at the community college. She could do this route for language as well.
If she chooses this route she will take remedial classes for the first year. Remedial classes do not count towards your degree because she will not have a high enough GPA, SAT score, or ACT score. Remedial courses are basically 4 years of high school in one year. If she can do that then they will let her into their program. If she can’t then she will drop out and the college will have just made $ 4,000.

I am not sure about the laws regarding attendance in school where you live, but sounds like she will have to go to truancy court. If she fails to go to school. Her parents will go to jail, and she will be taken into state custody. From there she will be forced to go to school.

The best thing you could do is to get her back into school. She may have already blown this semester, but if she doesn’t come back now she will be paying for this for the rest of her life.

Dreams don’t always come true. That’s something schools don’t teach children.
