Are You Ready to Become a Nurse?

The nursing profession is an ever growing profession. Every day, more and more nurses are needed to fill-in positions in different organizations world wide. With this increasing demand, the opportunities for nurses also open and increase from day to day. Since the resources are scarce, companies requiring the services of this professional continue to look for ways on how they will be able to retain and entice more talent in their pool. Given all the possibilities and potentials made available to a nurse, it is important to understand too that a nursing profession can be quite demanding. First of all, nursing students need to successful pass the licensure exam so that they may well take on the title of a registered nurse. Should you think of pursuing other opportunities outside the country of overseas, then there are exams too which you should fulfill as part of the requirement.

Given that nursing is a demanding job, it is equally important that one understands the amount of patience and hard work needed to become successful in this career. What this means for a student is that he or she needs to be well prepared and equip him with the necessary knowledge needed to complete the course. What this means is memorization of terms and coming across different processes. All of these things will be helpful for you to gain expertise on the profession and of course increase your competence in the field of health service.

On top of the studying which you will be involved in, you will also be immersed in on the job training programs in institutions where you will be designated to work in. This will give you the ability to experience how it feels to fulfill nursing duties. It is actually a good experiential activity which will also help you put into application the concepts which you have learned in school.

Almost all of the nursing schools give their students on the job training on hospitals and other medical institutions for six months. In the training, the students are able to experience how to be a nurse and practice all the principles and knowledge that they have learned in their classes. In addition, they are able to experience the real job of a nurse which includes dealing with real patients unlike in schools where they only use dummies as their patients.

Study Abroad Programs: Three Things You Must Know

Study abroad programs appear to have the learning system down. They provide the classes and the living arrangements and, of course, the country where you want to study. It’s all there.

Your job appears to be even easier. Travel to the country and soak up the language with little or no effort. When it’s time to return home, you are fluent and ready to accept a promotion for being bilingual.

Ok. It’s time to pinch yourself and wake up. That scenario doesn’t work unless you’re below the age of 5 and take in languages like you do video games.

You have a lot more to do in order to make your dream come true. It’s not difficult but it is more active than passive.

The truth is that the majority of students that travel overseas to learn Spanish or other languages come back with little or no improvement. They have high expectations when they leave but find that taking a leap to the “next level” is not as simple as they thought.

And it’s not the program’s fault in most cases. Study abroad programs fulfill their responsibility. They offer the students all they need to be comfortable and engaged. They solve problems, guide and encourage.

The problem lies with you, the learner. You have to be mentally prepared to enter a culture where you are not the top dog, the big cheese, the leader of the pack. In most cases, you’re the little brother who tags along. You know, the one who is always there but never has much to say.

Why waste all that money and time if that is the reality that awaits? No need to. Here are three suggestions for you to follow so that you get exactly what you’re looking for.

Tip #1 – Stay away from English speakers. Nothing can hinder your progress like hanging out with other English speakers. Forget this, “Oh, but he’s from England…I’ve never hung out with anyone from England before.” Plan on hanging out with someone from England once you become fluent. Not when you get there.

You must meet and hang out with native speakers as soon as you arrive. If you wait for the right time, it will never come. Do it immediately. Find a speaking partner, go to bars and meet people, take along an English speaking friend if they are as pumped up about learning Spanish as you. but get out there and make some new friends.

Tip #2 – Get used to eating humble pie. You may be the jokester at home but you are a wallflower in Spanish. Don’t get down on yourself. It won’t last forever. But learning is a process and this is one more step.

Don’t worry you can’t be the life of the party. Just be at the party for now and you’ll pick it up. It may take a month or two but what is that compared to years of being a fluent speaker?

Tip #3 – Keep studying. Why do you thinnk they call it “studying abroad.” Just because you’re in Spain or Mexico doesn’t mean you can leave your studies behind. Keep conjugating, keep a record of cool phrases and words, keep learning something new each day. The effect will be amazing.

I used to remember things I couldn’t say and look them up later. Then, I’d write them down. You can do it your way… just do it.

If you follow these strategies, I promise you will come back fluent and loving it. It is a real joy to speak a foreign language and you’ll know what I mean when you get there.

Just don’t throw your money and time away because it’s really neat to “hang with people from Alaska! or New Zealand! or wherever.

Studying abroad can get you to fluency faster than anything so do it right.

I’m interested in nursing in the middle east to save some money, is the money actually as good as people say?

it depends on yr nationality. a good proportion of nurses are from asia and far east and work for salaries that are quite low in comparison to uk rates. private hospitals that are uk/us run may employ western nurses and hopefully u would be able to secure a good package but no doubt there is a lot of competition for the jobs. have u tried enquiring of some recruitment agencies? i cant be more specific as unforutnately i left a few yrs ago and am a bit out of touch. best wishes

tafbutton blue16 Is the money that good for overseas trained nurses in the Middle East?

Particularly, grants and scholarships for people wishing to study in the UK and Europe. I’ve tried finding sites on google, but most are just ad-laden jokes.

If you are already enrolled in a graduate program (and I assume you are in the United States?), the most significant overseas grants can be found via the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, which administers the Fulbright Fellowship. (See link below.) Beyond that, it really depends on what field(s) or areas of research you are seeking to study. Any research university should have a graduate advisor dedicated to assisting graduate students applying to and seeking funding for studying abroad.

If you are seeking to apply for a graduate program in the UK/Europe, your chances for seeking a grant to support enrollment in a program are very slim. At the top of the scholarly food chain, of course, there is the Rhodes Scholarship, which is extremely competitive and highly refereed. For grants specific to an academic field, your best shot at securing reliable information (i.e, not ad-laden jokes) would be to physically go to similar/related departments at a local research university, and look through their bulletin board sections for study abroad programs. There you can find information (brochures, contact information, possibly application forms or information) on specific programs, as well as funding opportunities for them. Overseas programs send such information to their counterpart programs here precisely because they are seeking to attract students from overseas.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

5 Top Tips for Choosing an Honest Nursing Employment Agency

I have had a number of nurses write to me with stories of dishonest nursing employment agencies that have taken their money and done nothing for them. This can really shake your faith in people and leave you with a sour taste in your mouth… but do not let these dishonest people rob you of your dream of moving your nursing career abroad! Here are some tips on judging the quality of nursing recruiters that will help you kick start your job hunt.

Does the nursing employment agency have a website?

Most companies that are involved in recruiting internationally educated nurses have a website. There are a few things you need to look for on the website that will help you judge the quality of the agency and the recruiters working for them.

1. Are they affiliated with any professional recruiting membership organisation? Just like lawyers, teachers and travel agents have membership organisations, so do recruiting services. These membership organisations offer you; the client, protection from illegal fraudulent practices. Check the nursing agency’s website to see if they belong to a membership organisation. If they do not advertise it, you can email them and ask for this information.

2. How long has the nursing agency been operating? Nursing recruiting agencies that have been operating for a while are more likely to operate legally and consider your best interests because they have a reputation to maintain. One of the worst things a business can experience is poor recommendations passed around by word-of-mouth.

3. Is the website professional looking? If a company has not made the effort to put up a professional looking website, this may be a signal that they do not take their business seriously. The internet is an extremely powerful business tool, especially for a business that is working with nurses and nursing employers in different countries.

4. Can you find the agencies ‘terms of use’? It is customary for business on the internet to have a link to the company’s ‘terms of use’, is this easy to find? When you read it, can you understand what it means? Are the costs and responsibilities for using their recruiting service clearly stated?

5. Does the nursing employment agency have offline contacts listed? Online business should have a real life address, and they should show it clearly on their website. It may not be on the front page of the nursing agency’s website, it may be listed on a ‘Contact Us’ page or in fine print at the bottom of each page, or listed on the ‘terms of use’ page. If you can’t find a way to contact a representative of the agency offline, it is probably a good idea to be wary. Listing offline contact information is part of the USA’s anti-spam law and any company aiming to do business online with the USA or its citizens is required to list this information.

While I cannot guarantee that using these tips will secure you a nursing career overseas, I can assure you with confidence that I have used these strategies myself and have always had good luck with them.
