Why Choose Nursing Abroad as a Career

Why choose nursing abroad as a career? Many reasons come to mind; you can advance your career, gain a variety of clinical experiences, make a higher salary and, fulfill your travel desires, to name a few.

Many countries are experiencing an acute shortage of qualified experienced nurses. This has resulted in a golden opportunity for internationally educated nurses to move overseas either temporarily for a year or two, or to immigrate permanently.

Advancing your Nursing Career Abroad

Because these countries are crying out for nurses to fill immediate vacancies at all levels it is easy for overseas nurses to springboard their way into senior nursing positions which may include supervisory or management roles.

Even if you are not keen on moving your nursing career abroad permanently, taking your nursing job overseas for a year or two to gain experience in a management role can launch you into management once you return home with a newly enhanced resume.

Gain a Variety of Clinical Experience

Nursing overseas can open up opportunities to encounter different clinical experiences because although you will probably initially be hired to nurse in the specialty in which you currently have experience, you will come across country and region specific experiences.

Nursing overseas will also allow you to gain experience in alternative techniques and approaches to nursing and healthcare.

Earn a Higher Salary

Countries experiencing acute nursing shortages are desperate for nurses to fill the vacancies in their healthcare system. As a result they are often paying higher wages in an attempt to attract more nurses, both domestically and internationally. Many healthcare recruiters are also offering benefits and bonuses that can add to your bottom line.

I have had a number of colleagues who have worked abroad for a few years to save money then returned home with a healthy house deposit or paid off their student loans completely.

Travel and Explore the World

Nursing abroad means you will make your home in a new region of the world. The opportunity this lends to explore new countries and cultures is priceless. If your dream is to explore the UK, the USA, Australia… then moving your nursing career abroad to one of these countries currently experiencing acute nursing shortages will give you the opportunity to fulfill your dream and fund it at the same time.

This is a technique I have used personally to explore the UK, Eastern Europe and South East Asia over the last 12 years.

Nursing is a transferrable occupation

Moving your nursing career abroad is a realistic option for both experienced and newly registered nurses not only because there is a worldwide shortage of nurses, but also because there is a long history of nurses moving around the world to work.

The most you will be required to do in order to get a job in a new country is prove you are registered at home, have a suitable equivalent level of education and training and perhaps sit an exam. While different countries have vastly different rules which can be confusing to work around, it is easy to find a nursing job abroad with the right roadmap through the recruiting and registration process.

The Benefits of Nursing Abroad

The demand for skilled nurses is high and only expected to continue to rise in the coming years. There are a variety of reasons for the need for nursing professionals. As the population ages it is important to have adequate nurses to staff hospitals and nursing facilities. The increased specialization of medicine also requires for an increase in the specialization of those who administer care, including nurses. Finally, as the costs of medical care skyrocket, nurses of all levels, licensed practical nurses, registered nurses and nurse practitioners, are taking on more of the care involved in treating patients.

These are not issues specific to the United States. Nearly every country is in need of trained nurses. This makes nursing a wonderful career option for many people. The options available to a competent nurse are limitless. For the individual who wishes to travel, nursing abroad offers many benefits as well.

Working Abroad for Personal Reasons

There are many personal benefits to working abroad. For those who like to travel or experience a new culture, nursing abroad is a terrific way to finance a lifestyle that would otherwise be difficult. While the idea of packing your belongings and moving half a world away may seem overwhelming, it does not need to be so.

Many nurses who work abroad gain employment through a staffing agency. This staffing agency, in addition to finding work for the nurse will help with the transition abroad. The agency professionals know exactly what documents you will need and what specific immunizations you require, depending on the country that you will be working in. In addition, they can help you find housing and set up your banking.

While you will still be working in your time abroad, nursing abroad allows you to fulfill your desire for travel, living in a foreign country and experiencing a different culture. For many people nursing abroad is a wonderful lifestyle.

Working Abroad for Professional Reasons

There are a variety of professional reasons that a nurse may want to work abroad. Many areas of the world have less than ideal health care available. A nurse one of these communities can literally be a lifesaver. Working one on one with families, helping them with basic nutrition, immunization and other medical situations can be a very rewarding experience for the professional nurse.

Also, many nurses enjoy working abroad. As highly trained as these nurses are, if they stay in the United States, they will not use all of their skills. In many countries, a recent graduate of nursing school will be able to gain much valuable and diversified experience working with patients. The same graduate, had they remained in the United States, would probably spend several months in orientation programs at the hospital where they work, maybe rotating through various floors doing basic level nursing. For the nurse who desires to jump into a health career with both feet, spending time nursing abroad can be a wonderful way to gain much needed experience. Later, if you decide to return to the States, this experience will make you a sought after employee.

Make the Most of Your Experience Nursing Abroad

To get the most from your overseas experience it is important to keep some things in mind:

Know your intentions. If you want to nurse abroad for the travel and cultural experience your choice in destination will be different than if you want to work in an under-served and poor area that is lacking in health care.
Know what you are getting in to. Do not think that you are being selfish by inquiring about living conditions ahead of time. This is a huge commitment. Only you know your comfort level. Some nursing abroad opportunities will offer all the comforts of home, while others will not offer running water. By understanding the conditions up front you increase the odds of a comfortable stay.
Know how long you want to stay. While plans can change, it helps the nursing agency to coordinate their staff if they know generally how long you want to stay. Some new graduates take a year to nurse abroad, some go for a few weeks, and some go abroad to nurse and end up relocating permanently. While there is no way to know how you will feel about an area before you actually arrive, having a plan allows you and the staffing agency to find the best fit for your situation.

Nursing abroad, whether for a few weeks or permanently, can be both personally and professionally fulfilling. The numerous staffing agencies available will help ease your transition and allow you to make the most of your time abroad.

Baby Born Onboard Flight KU411

2 Baby Born Onboard Flight KU411Baby Born Onboard Flight KU411

Last October, I went with my mom to the Philippines to visit family and friends. We took the Kuwait Airways flight which left Bangkok at around noon. There were only a few passengers onboard that particular flight, mostly OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) from Kuwait going back home for the ‘All Souls Day’. My mom and I were both prepared to take a short nap, hoping that by the time the stewardess served food we would be refreshed. Just as soon as the plane took off, I noticed some commotion over at the front, just around 10 rows away from where we were seated. A cabin crew — later we learned he was the purser — seemed troubled. He went back and forth between the cockpit and the passenger. I sensed that something seriously wrong must be happening over there.

Just minutes after the plane was steady and the ‘fasten seatbelts’ light went off, the captain announced for any physicians onboard. When I looked around and saw that no one did anything, I turned to my mom who was half asleep. She practiced nursing years ago before she switched to teaching kindergarten kids English. If there weren’t any doctors onboard, then my mom could at least dig up the theories and skills from the rusty parts of her memory and put it to good use. My mom got up and went over to the passenger, informing the cabin crew that she was a nurse and asked if there is anything she could do to help. It turned out that a pregnant 23-year-old woman was in labor!!

Four nurses and a pharmacist showed up and volunteered to help the woman deliver her baby. Cabin crew are trained for this kind of emergency, but of course they could never beat the professionals. For over 2 hours, the woman was in labor. The five Samaritans gathered around her the whole time, trying to calm her and to help her go through the pain. She didn’t scream, but her face expressed very clearly what she was going through. It must have felt embarrassing to travel alone, and have a bunch of strangers around you in such a private moment.

There is a reason why she was traveling alone, and why she had to lie to the airline company that she was 7 months pregnant (when it was actually 9 months), but I’ll leave it out since it is a private matter.

Should we turn back to Bangkok? Should we go ahead to Manila? Call the ambulance for standby at the Manila airport!! Where’s the first aid kit? Do we have sterilized gloves? Blankets! More blankets! The curtain! Close it! Tell the captain everything is fine and nothing is there to worry about. You hold the oxygen tank and the mask! Temperature! Monitor it! Heart rate! Blood pressure! Monitor everything! Who’s keeping the log? We need something to clamp the umbilical cord with!! Panic, excitement, fear, worry…

I was worried too. My mom told me to come up with a name for the baby, and so the thinking process kind of calmed me down a bit. I thought ‘airplane’ and ‘Bangkok’ and ‘Manila’. Finally, I ended up with Jethaphil which stands for ‘born on a jet flying from Thailand to the Philippines’. Cool huh?

When flying in lower altitude, the air pressure in the cabin changes. As the plane descended, the baby started to come. My mom said the change in air pressure allowed the woman to push more. The ad hoc medical team assisted the delivery very efficiently. They improvised and used what was available at that time. The cabin crew was also very cooperative, but I could understand that some were afraid of blood and all that ‘stuff’. It took only a short while. Although very curious of what was happening at that part of the aircraft, all the passengers were in their seats. It seemed like everyone was silently praying for a safe delivery.

‘It’s a boy!’ I announced to the passengers. Everyone applauded and shouted praises to the Heavens. The time was 15.47 hrs Manila LT, somewhere above the South China Sea.

I asked the woman’s permission to take some pictures, and she said it was okay… So here it is!
