Question by 2008: I want to spend a semester studying overseas in England?
I’m going to be a sophomore in college, and I have a friend over in England. She wants me to stay with her for a semester and go to the local university. However, I have some questions. Will my college allow me to pick my own school, and live off-campus? I am double majoring in political science and international affairs btw. Thanks.

Answer by cathrl69
I think it’s pretty unlikely that your college is going to let you pick some random English university just because that’s where your friend goes. At the very least you’d need to demonstrate that the course is at the same sort of level as the course you’d be taking back home. For instance, it’s most unlikely that an Ivy League college would accept grades from a UK university in the low hundreds of the rating table. Conversely, Oxford or Cambridge probably won’t even take someone from a not very highly rated US college.
The double major may also be an issue. Most UK courses don’t work like that – there are degree courses with two subjects in, but they are pretty much fixed as to what the two subjects are. At least yours are closely related
But you’d need to either find a UK course which covered both subjects adequately or you’d need to get permission to only focus on one of them for that semester. Or term. You do know most universities here have three terms a year and not two semesters, right? US students in the UK generally do “junior year abroad” for a whole year, not just part of one.
Basically you need to go to your college and discuss with them what their requirements are to give you credit for studying abroad for a while. They may be very rigid (“we do exchanges with this one university and that’s it”) or more flexible.
