Question by Happy Feet: Will I be able to practice NURSING in the UK if I have got a full MEDICAL degree from abroad?
Recently I have received my medical degree and completed my full pre-registration training outside the UK. However, I would like to become a registered nurse instead of a doctor.
Firstly, a Daily Mail article has claimed that staff nurses registered abroad can come into the UK and practice – they don’t have to take any tests. Is that correct?
Will I have to study for the full-time 3-year nursing degree in the UK? Or will my medical degree be taken into account?
Yep, my degree is fine, it is fully recognised by the GMC.

Answer by RoaringMice You can’t train to become a doctor and work as an RN. Nurses and doctors’ jobs are not the same. You haven’t received the right training to be a nurse. But I wonder… contact some nursing programs near you. Ask them if you can be granted any sort of advanced standing into their nursing program, due to your foreign medical degree.
Keep in mind that not all foreign medical degrees are acceptable in the UK. Those from some countries are not. Is yours okay?
You know… another idea is to see if you can’t get into an MS nursing program, with your BS in medicine. That’s worth a question.

Hi, I’m an international student studying Electronics, Telecommunications and Internet Engineering in a UK university. I’m a 2nd year student and I’m hoping to do a placement (industrial year) next year in the US. Now what are my chances? What are average annual salaries? Can companies provide work permit (visa) ? Where to look? any suggested companies?

Answer by CPG If it is just a placement for a year, then you are looking at a J1 visa. I suggest you do some research on viable companies and the travel.state. website is a good source of information.
As salaries, you are looking at entry level if not less considering you are on a placement/internship. If you mean work permits after your placement, they can petition you for one if you have a bachelor’s degree, but they are under no obligations to do so.

I am a nursing major in college and currently going for my BSN in nursing. I am two years done with school at a liberal arts school. This fall i will be entering in my first year of clinicals-I am so excited to start actually learning nursing stuff! However, i was thinking more into the future. Next summer I was thinking about either doing a nurse intern or PCA job over the summer. But then i got to thinking maybe i could find an internship abroad. Does anyone know of any good places to work with for this or places to call/get more info? And has anyone done one of these before? -Am i able to do it only one year of clinicals(of two) down? I am just really interested in going abroad for a life changing experience. Thank you for your help!

Answer by Diane A I can’t imagine any nursing program in the US letting you do a clinical year abroad. There are legal liabilities, different educational skills & requirements from country to country, the medications are different and have different names, the duties are often quite different as well, lectures & content can not be equated to your US equivalents either. What if you did and cam back and couldn’t pass the NCLEX because of this?

It’s just an idea, but he wants to break up and I don’t. Where we live doesn’t offer the degree I want to study. I’ve been looking at other colleges to get an idea of costs. Would you break up with your gf/bf if she was just thinking about studying overseas?
