nursing degree from abroad?

Question by jasleen: nursing degree from abroad?
Hi all,

My sister-in-law recently came from India. She was a RN in India and now she is planning to work as a nurse in USA, but she is confused about how can she start her career here. Should she do LVN program and then go for RN program or what can she do? does she have to do all her study again or she can sit in NCLex exam. Please suggest something. We live in California(if state needed).

thank you.

She needs to contact the CA state board of nursing. Google their website. They will also probably have information on their site about foreign-educated nurses so you might not even have to call to find the information you’re looking for.

Question by Happy Feet: Will I be able to practice NURSING in the UK if I have got a full MEDICAL degree from abroad?
Recently I have received my medical degree and completed my full pre-registration training outside the UK. However, I would like to become a registered nurse instead of a doctor.
Firstly, a Daily Mail article has claimed that staff nurses registered abroad can come into the UK and practice – they don’t have to take any tests. Is that correct?
Will I have to study for the full-time 3-year nursing degree in the UK? Or will my medical degree be taken into account?
Yep, my degree is fine, it is fully recognised by the GMC.

You can’t train to become a doctor and work as an RN. Nurses and doctors’ jobs are not the same. You haven’t received the right training to be a nurse. But I wonder… contact some nursing programs near you. Ask them if you can be granted any sort of advanced standing into their nursing program, due to your foreign medical degree.

Keep in mind that not all foreign medical degrees are acceptable in the UK. Those from some countries are not. Is yours okay?

You know… another idea is to see if you can’t get into an MS nursing program, with your BS in medicine. That’s worth a question.

Question by asdfghjkl: If I pursue a nursing degree in college, will I ever be able to study abroad?
So I definitely want to major in nursing in college. I’ve wanted to be a nurse my whole life. But, one of the most exciting things about college is getting to study abroad. I’m worried that if I pursue a nursing degree, that I’ll never get to study abroad! So is it true? I just need some advice on this situation. Thank you

Answer by Amber Marie
You can study abroad with Nursing, but you will want an exchange program that is partnered with your school, and you will have to do it in an English speaking country (if English is your only language), unless you are also minoring in that language. If you go to a country where English is not the official language they will not teach anything besides that language to you, you wouldn’t be able to take nursing courses. The study away director at your school will be able to help you.

Question by Lindsay♥: Can I study abroad on a nursing degree?
I’m a high school student and I’m planning on going to Penn State University on a nursing major. I heard that in Penn State you spend either your junior or senior year of college at a hospital, so I was hoping to do my senior year there and study abroad in France a semester in junior year. I was wondering if I can study abroad on a nursing major? Thanks!!

Question by Meg London: if I get my bachelor’s degree in nursing abroad is it less credited than a USA degree?
I want to go to university in New Zealand to get my bachelor’s in nursing. I am from the USA now and am wondering if I did go to New Zealand, would my degree be significantly less impressive than a degree from the USA? thanks! and I am fairly smart too; I would not be going to an ivy league back in the states, but a fairly good school.

You’d most likely need to get licensed in the US upon returning, but NZ and other foreign (European especially) schools are actually as good as or even better than their US counterparts.
