Question by sHeLLyBuRGeRs: Where is the best place to study nursing in the Philippines?
I want to study abroad to pursue my nursing career. Can someone please help me locate a school in Philippines that has there own facilities. What I am trying to say is I want to find a school where I don’t need to commute to intern for a distant hospital. Oh, and preferably one that doesn’t require uniforms if possible. Thank you in advance! =]

Some schools in Manila with hospitals are University of the Philippines, Manila Doctors College, Mapua Makati, University of Sto Tomas, San Juan de Dios Medical Center, University of the East – Ramon Magsaysay.
Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila is excellent in BSN, but you’ll have to commute to get to a hospital. It’s not that far, anyway. 3 of their students are in the Top 10 of the 2009 Nursing Licensure Exams.

Goodluck with the uniform issue. Nursing is a course that requires a uniform. Mainly because it’s about staying clean all the time. Although in most schools, uniforms are not required in the Freshman year.

I’m a senior high school student and I also intend to be a nurse. I’ve been researching and I recommend Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. Hopefully, I’ll pass the entrance exam. icon smile Q&A: Where is the best place to study nursing in the Philippines?

Question by slickboy: Is it better to study abroad (Philippines) for nursing?
I’m a US Citizen and i would like to know if it’s better to study abroad in the Philippines and graduate from a nursing school (BSN)? My plan is to study there until i graduate and then come back in the US to work as a nurse. My problem is, people are saying that i will have to take some classes or have to pass certain requirements because i studied abroad. The only reason i want to study abroad is first, it’s cheap, second, it’s faster because US take forever to even get into a real nursing school. Please help? Advise me? Thanks icon smile Is it better to study abroad (Philippines) for nursing? )

Answer by Bluekittie
If you study abroad and receive your BSN there, you will still have to be tested her in the US and certified here. Your transcript will have to be looked at to make sure you have taken all the required subjects and if the courses are equivalent to what the US requires. It may seem quicker, but it will be more of a hassle and take more time this way.
Start out at a Community College and transfer to finish.

Baby Born Onboard Flight KU411

2 Baby Born Onboard Flight KU411Baby Born Onboard Flight KU411

Last October, I went with my mom to the Philippines to visit family and friends. We took the Kuwait Airways flight which left Bangkok at around noon. There were only a few passengers onboard that particular flight, mostly OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) from Kuwait going back home for the ‘All Souls Day’. My mom and I were both prepared to take a short nap, hoping that by the time the stewardess served food we would be refreshed. Just as soon as the plane took off, I noticed some commotion over at the front, just around 10 rows away from where we were seated. A cabin crew — later we learned he was the purser — seemed troubled. He went back and forth between the cockpit and the passenger. I sensed that something seriously wrong must be happening over there.

Just minutes after the plane was steady and the ‘fasten seatbelts’ light went off, the captain announced for any physicians onboard. When I looked around and saw that no one did anything, I turned to my mom who was half asleep. She practiced nursing years ago before she switched to teaching kindergarten kids English. If there weren’t any doctors onboard, then my mom could at least dig up the theories and skills from the rusty parts of her memory and put it to good use. My mom got up and went over to the passenger, informing the cabin crew that she was a nurse and asked if there is anything she could do to help. It turned out that a pregnant 23-year-old woman was in labor!!

Four nurses and a pharmacist showed up and volunteered to help the woman deliver her baby. Cabin crew are trained for this kind of emergency, but of course they could never beat the professionals. For over 2 hours, the woman was in labor. The five Samaritans gathered around her the whole time, trying to calm her and to help her go through the pain. She didn’t scream, but her face expressed very clearly what she was going through. It must have felt embarrassing to travel alone, and have a bunch of strangers around you in such a private moment.

There is a reason why she was traveling alone, and why she had to lie to the airline company that she was 7 months pregnant (when it was actually 9 months), but I’ll leave it out since it is a private matter.

Should we turn back to Bangkok? Should we go ahead to Manila? Call the ambulance for standby at the Manila airport!! Where’s the first aid kit? Do we have sterilized gloves? Blankets! More blankets! The curtain! Close it! Tell the captain everything is fine and nothing is there to worry about. You hold the oxygen tank and the mask! Temperature! Monitor it! Heart rate! Blood pressure! Monitor everything! Who’s keeping the log? We need something to clamp the umbilical cord with!! Panic, excitement, fear, worry…

I was worried too. My mom told me to come up with a name for the baby, and so the thinking process kind of calmed me down a bit. I thought ‘airplane’ and ‘Bangkok’ and ‘Manila’. Finally, I ended up with Jethaphil which stands for ‘born on a jet flying from Thailand to the Philippines’. Cool huh?

When flying in lower altitude, the air pressure in the cabin changes. As the plane descended, the baby started to come. My mom said the change in air pressure allowed the woman to push more. The ad hoc medical team assisted the delivery very efficiently. They improvised and used what was available at that time. The cabin crew was also very cooperative, but I could understand that some were afraid of blood and all that ‘stuff’. It took only a short while. Although very curious of what was happening at that part of the aircraft, all the passengers were in their seats. It seemed like everyone was silently praying for a safe delivery.

‘It’s a boy!’ I announced to the passengers. Everyone applauded and shouted praises to the Heavens. The time was 15.47 hrs Manila LT, somewhere above the South China Sea.

I asked the woman’s permission to take some pictures, and she said it was okay… So here it is!

Amazing Beauty of the Philippines

2 Amazing Beauty of the PhilippinesThere was once a lovely Filipina from the Philippine countryside who has to go to school in Metro Manila. Unable to make both ends meet, she has no better option but to try the red light district. It helped her dream to go overseas for greener pasture within reach.

In no time, her U.S. tourist visa was approved and before she knew it, she had a job with a decent pay as a nursing aide and eventually earned immigrant status. Earning enough money overseas doesn’t mean helping her family back in the Philippines of their financial needs is a sure thing. Modern lifestyle abroad made her spending lavishly that seems like a necessity, worse than her life in Metro-Manila. She even had a second job.

One day, she decided for a long visit to the Philippines with enough money on hand to try everything that she had never experienced earlier in her life. Unfortunately, she met a Manila hustler looking for a victim exactly just like her and she fell prey. Turning nights into days, she became an instant common figure of the malls, discos, bars and eventually became a nightmare of every parent, an addict to drugs.

Bad fortunes started trailing her and got closer to her side when the two typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng struck her hometown and devastated all of their properties. On top of that, her parents became sick and brothers became alcoholics to her disbelief. The parents’ only wish to her is to pull herself up with wisdom and praise God despite all of their setbacks.

She needs more money now more than ever, the same thing that her boyfriend was also longing from her. Her guardian angel, as patient as ever, hinted her that God is always there to turn to. She passed by so many Churches, typical in many places in Manila yet she wouldn’t go in. She paused many times and thought, “I tried it before but it didn’t help much.” But who else should she turn to, her idiot boyfriends? She hit the crossroad and felt very confused and vulnerable. Would she go in or go the other way?

At some other point, she met a rich flamboyant Makati playboy. She opted for the easier way – with him and forgot all about the wisdom that her parents taught her. With her more sophisticated profile as a ‘balikbayan,’ or stateside, she blended very well in the jet set communities of Makati and Ortigas Center and she was enjoying the night life more than ever with a dream come true. The Makati playboy turned out to be the same as the hustler she first met but in better attire. She added another page to her life but with the same title. Her misery outweighs all the good times.

Feeling so humiliated and besieged, she left to say goodbye not just to him, not just to her circles of friend, but to the whole world. She passed by Baclaran Church and saw thousands of women walking with their knees to the tabernacle. With one last tear from her eyes and whatever energy still remained on her, she decided to try literally, the last thing in her priority list and there she went, towards the door of the miraculous Redemptorist Church of Baclaran. She can barely hear over the thousands of women in their tears asking for the intercession of the Blessed Mother to pray for their needs. She then followed the crowd, knelt, and started to move towards the image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. She felt better about it and at the same time felt an urge in her to talk to Jesus Christ for forgiveness.

She rode a taxi to Quiapo Church and again saw thousands of Filipino faithful on their knees. But this time, she did it without hesitation and never felt as sorry for her sins, truly as ever in her whole life. Then she asked Jesus on the Crucifix if He can still forgive her. To her astonishment, she saw Jesus with a smile on His face so compelling, she felt like floating in the air. She took that positively and left the Church. On her way home, she passed by Manila Bay that happened to be on a sunset. She never appreciated that beauty so much in her whole life until that day, and she started praying to the Lord for guidance in her new beginning, for strength to regain the wisdom that her parents taught her.

Temptations and booby traps abound our society but it’s our duty to protect the gift that God gave us. Life is not just full of miseries. It’s filled with opposing forces, good or bad and punishment or reward. It’s up to us to know the difference then pick the right one, the path to wisdom that precedes a stronger faith in God. “We must pray as if everything depends on God and work as if everything depends on us.”
